On fire Portuguese DJ and producer Ricardo Cardoso aka Ritz is back at Piston with the superb Ensemble EP, which follows his Silver Linings EP from a few months ago. Ricardo is also relishing the release of his album, Meditation, which also saw a CD and Vinyl release to the delight of many. He has delivered a series of quality cuts for us over the years and has amassed quite an impressive release count, with quality always at the forefront. Ricardo got the electronic music bug in the mid 90’s after visiting clubs such as Climacz and Alcantara-Mar. He quickly got into Deep House, Deep Dub, House and Leftfield House. It was under the pseudonym M0u53 that in 2015 he released several singles and EPs ON Audaz Recordings and Hush Recordz. In 2016 he changed his stage name to Ritz, and since then he has worked with many national and international publishers such as ARTS, Blossom Kollektiv, Hypnotic Room, Open Bar Music, Plastic City and many more. Ricardo also runs his own imprint called Left Hook Recordings where he showcases his own unique sound. He rarely does DJ sets and when he does, it is on special occasions using only his own music. Always a pleasure hearing his latest efforts and, no doubt, we’ll be seeing and hearing much more in the future.

Ensemble opens with a real nice organic drum sequence as deep, grooving basses fade up. The drums have a live feel which gives the track character, adding a richness to the vibe. Smooth chords are met with stabby synth pads that blend effortlessly together, complimenting the strong bassline. Cool voices create a club ambience while groovy keys are the icing on the cake.

Affection is a deep, groovy and funky slice of house music. An interesting kick pattern opens the track which is soon joined by scattered hi hats and rhythmic percussions. The drums are the driving force here, as the kicks transform between breaks and 4×4 patterns. Hi strings and mesmerizing synth notes join a dancey bassline that forces the hips to move. Top notch stuff that is not to be missed.

Chiliad intros with a strong kick drum and striking hi hat combi. Deep, probing bass notes fill out the low end as surreal pads create a mesmerizing atmosphere. The drums get the track moving with smooth rhythms forming out of a plethora of percs. Hypnotic and driving, proper heads down fodder for the late-night sessions and does not disappoint.

Long Story Short offers a smooth, deep, lush vibe filled with warm basses and dynamic percussions. A solid kick drum leads the way as spacey FX ripple through the groove. Hi strings compliment one-shot vocals and swirling pads. Bright piano notes cut through the deeper elements adding contrast to the warmth and fluidity of the track. Superb stuff and a must have.
